Justice Smith was born on August 9, 1995, in Los Angeles, California, to a family of mixed race, with his father, Wayne Smith, of African-American descent, and his mother, Duilia Setacci, of French-Canadian and Italian background.

Smith was born into a family with many siblings, being the fifth of nine. They all grew up together in the same home, he found love for acting at a young age, and was supported by his family, who work as musicians.

He attended the Orange County School of the Arts in Los Angeles and graduated in 2013 with a degree in acting.
