Early Life and Education
Bob Dylan was born on May 24, 1941, in Duluth, Minnesota, and was raised in the nearby mining town of Hibbing.
He is the son of Abram Zimmerman and Beatrice “Beatty” Stone Zimmerman, both of whom came from Ashkenazi Jewish families whose ancestors had emigrated from Eastern Europe.
Dylan grew up alongside his younger brother, David Zimmerman. During his childhood, he developed a fascination with country, blues, and early rock and roll, spending countless hours listening to the radio and teaching himself to play musical instruments.
He graduated from Hibbing High School in 1959, then enrolled at the University of Minnesota, where he studied briefly before leaving to pursue a full-time music career in New York City.
Career
Bob Dylan began performing in coffeehouses and folk clubs during the early 1960s after moving to New York City. Inspired by artists such as Woody Guthrie, he quickly became one of the leading voices of the American folk revival.
His early albums, including The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan and The Times They Are a-Changin’, featured socially conscious songs that became anthems for the civil rights and anti-war movements.
In 1965, Dylan famously embraced electric instruments with the release of Highway 61 Revisited, producing the landmark single “Like a Rolling Stone,” a song widely regarded as one of the greatest recordings in popular music history.
Over the following decades, Dylan continued to reinvent his musical style, exploring rock, country, gospel, blues, and traditional American music.
His critically acclaimed albums include Blood on the Tracks, Desire, Time Out of Mind, Love and Theft, Modern Times, Rough and Rowdy Ways, and many others.
Beyond music, he has published books, created acclaimed visual artwork, and remained an influential touring artist through his long-running Never Ending Tour.
His extraordinary body of work has earned him numerous honours, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Pulitzer Prize Special Citation, and the Nobel Prize in Literature, cementing his legacy as one of the most influential cultural figures of the modern era.
